O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. She made it into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled at her singing performances. O'Neil was praised highly from jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three as well as the second place. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience they believed that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil was never in the bottom 3 again after a series of consistently outstanding performance. Judge Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would win in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest in show history in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol right away.
